Salinger was single-minded about how he wanted his texts to be printed: no author photograph; no biography; no cover blurb; no endorsements; no quotes; no nothing, except of course the title and his name. The results are entirely befitting in their sophistication and minimalism; the typographical nuances embodying everything that Salinger stood for in his prose and what he ultimately became in person—iconoclast; literary paragon; recluse. Back in the States, traumatized and disillusioned, Salinger sought solace in Eastern religion, and in particular, the teachings of Zen Buddhism, Advaita Vedanta and Russian folklore.

College-boy Lane Coutell waits for his girlfriend, Franny Glass , to arrive by train. The big football game against Yale is this weekend. He rereads her letter, in which she repeatedly expresses her love for him. Franny arrives, and he asks her about the pea-green book she is carrying.

Franny & Zooey by J. D. Salinger

Franny and Zooey is just pages long. I write that not to advocate it as a quick read or even to suggest that it might be cheap although both might be handy for the beach. I point it out because its length is wildly deceptive. For within what Salinger himself described as a "pretty skimpy-looking book", he manages to steamroll a sizeable chunk of the human condition. Published in the New Yorker in and as a short story and a novella, Franny and Zooey first appeared together in The curtain rises on Franny as the eponymous fresh-faced American college girl, Frances Glass, arrives by train to meet her boyfriend, Lane, ahead of a big university football match. But over lunch, Franny's skittish, intellectual gaiety begins to crack, revealing a bitter abhorrence of phony experts, narcissistic ambition and above all, ego.

Franny and Zooey is a book by American author J. The book focuses on siblings Franny and Zooey, the two youngest members of the Glass family , which was a frequent focus of Salinger's writings. The story takes place in an unnamed college town during Franny's weekend visit to her boyfriend Lane. Disenchanted with the selfishness and inauthenticity she perceives all around her, she aims to escape it through spiritual means. While actor Zooey's younger sister Franny suffers a spiritual and existential breakdown in their parents' Manhattan living room, leaving their mother Bessie deeply concerned, Zooey comes to Franny's aid, offering what she thinks is brotherly love, understanding, and words of sage advice. The short story concerns Franny's weekend date with her collegiate boyfriend, Lane Coutell. Lane takes her to a fashionable lunch room, where Franny quickly becomes exasperated when he only appears interested in conversing about the minutiae of his academic frustrations.

Situated at the crossroads of the s' emerging cultural debates on women's rights and institutionalized sexism, Franny and Zooey refuses to critique or promote either sociological or popular theories addressing Franny Glass's narrative-driving breakdown at Sickler's restaurant and subsequent crisis at her family home in Manhattan. This ambivalence made the text difficult to evaluate in its own time; thus, I open a new discussion of Franny and Zooey , examining its commentary on the effects of mass cultural images and representations of women. He remembered that once, in a borrowed car, after kissing Franny for a half hour or so, he had kissed her coat lapel, as though it were a perfectly desirable, organic extension of the person herself.

I, and others, will suggest to you that, regardless of origin and intent, this volume works very well as a novel. In the Franny section chapter , we meet a giddy Franny Glass, through a letter announcing her excitement to be seeing soon and love for, one Lane Coutell, Lit major. Very shortly after her arrival, her enthusiasm wanes, a wariness of phonyism a la Holden Caulfield is voiced, and both may have something to do with a newfound interest in constant prayer. Acting matters. Embodiment matters. Let there be lights, camera, action.

Though brilliantly sunny, Saturday morning was overcoat weather again, not just topcoat weather, as it had been all week and as everyone had hoped it would stay for the big weekend — the week- end of the Yale game. Of the twenty-some young men who were waiting at the station for their dates to arrive on the ten-fifty-two, no more than six or seven were out on the cold, open platform. The rest were standing around in hatless, smoky little groups of twos and threes and fours inside the heated waiting room, talking in voices that, almost without exception, sounded collegiately dogmatic, as though each young man, in his strident, conversational turn, was clearing up, once and for all, some highly controversial issue, one that the outside, non-matriculating world had been bungling, provocatively or not, for centuries. Lane Coutell, in a Burberry raincoat that apparently had a wool liner buttoned into it, was one of the six or seven boys out on the open platform. For ten minutes or more, he had deliberately been standing just out of conversation range of the other boys, his back against the free Christian Science literature rack, his ungloved hands in his coat pockets. He was wearing a maroon cashmere muffler which had hiked up on his neck, giving him next to no protection against the cold.

Through Franny Glass's spiritual breakdown, J. Salinger explores issues in not only mysticism and religion but also family, celebrity, education, and intellectualism. Of course, the religious themes are important: By the end of the "Zooey" section, Salinger seems to have arrived at a spiritual doctrine, to be followed by many of his characters.
