Actor-network theory, commonly abbreviated as ANT, has become a key inspiration for geographers to incorporate materiality into geographical theorizing and practice and conceive of agency as a distributed arrangement. For ANT, all entities, whether they are germs or people, stand on equal ontological footing in the beginning. Actor—network theory ANT is an approach to research that sits with a broader body of new materialism; a body of work that displaces humanism to consider dynamic assemblages of humans and nonhumans. Originally developed in the social studies of science and technology undertaken in the second half of the 20th century, ANT has increasingly been taken up in other arenas of social inquiry. Rather, the social, like all other effects, is taken to be an enactment of heterogenous assemblages of human and nonhuman entities. Aligning most closely with ethnographic orientations, ANT does not outline a method. Humans are not privileged in ANT. Second, the principle of irreduction—there is no essence within or beyond any process of assemblage.

There is an increase in the use of the Actor-Network Theory ANT in various fields of social sciences and most recently in marketing and consumption research. In marketing discipline, however, this approach has been incorporated more widely in international studies. This article argues for the applicability of ANT to the field of research consumption in Brazil. ANTs main contribution relates to its unique perspective in analyzing human-things relationships, interactions and trajectories. This article, therefore, aims to explore the existent themes and contributions, the methods of application, criticisms and comparisons with other ontology approaches facing the social and actors involved. Finally, the study discusses possibilities raised by ANT for future research, showing how its resources can rejuvenate marketing research with focus on the collective and worldly learning that exceeds cognitive, economic and cultural connections, and emphasizes socio-material aspects present in the consumer realm. Using thorough investigation of actors and their direct connections, ANT reveals findings about what is unique, but also universal in studies developed by Brazilian researchers.
This double-symposium assembles a group of people, papers and presentations both in the symposium room and connected to it via the Internet. Brought together we will use this time and space to explore the constellation of methods and philosophical approaches that have emerged from the field of science and technology studies as actor-network theory ANT , material semiotics or the sociology of translation. The symposium comprises a collection of enactments of ANT in relation to prior research and live data from the conference. Brought together these offer insights for researching, theorising, interfering in and reconfiguring networked learning. That sentence itself poses a challenge, positioning ANT as an it: a singularity.
Its descriptions concern the means by which the phenomena of the social and natural worlds are generated through the webs of relations in which they are embedded. Actor network theory, Law says, is a toolkit for telling stories or narratives about how those webs of relations assemble, are stabilised and maintained or fall apart. The stories that actor network theory tells, however, are performative, not transparent. They partake in the webs they study, altering them, generating still further webs. Actor network theory, according to Law, is sensitive to the messy practices of the world, particularly their relational, semiotic, material and performative character. The phrase "actor network theory", Law continues, covers a range of practices which overlap with other intellectual traditions. One of the intellectual origins of actor network theory lies in the work of Michel Callon who, in considering why an early version of the electric vehicle failed to develop into a significant socio-technical phenomenon, addressed the problem of how to describe socially and materially heterogeneous systems in all their fragility and obduracy.

The focus of actor network theory is on the reality and transformability of networks, as against such notions as institutions and society. It deals with the articulation of material, textural, architectural, technological, financial, environmental, textual, discursive and subjective phenomena as a system or network acting to create coherence and subject to change or modification.
