Sea-level rise is a major effect of climate change.

Earth's atmosphere is composed of air. We usually model air as a uniform no variation or fluctuation gas with properties that are averaged from all the individual components. Any gas has certain properties that we can detect with our senses. The values and relations of the properties define the state of the gas. On this slide you will find typical values of the properties of air at sea level static conditions for a standard day.

Make connections between population density and coasts. Explain to students that darker areas indicate greater population density , which measures how many people live in a square mile. A square mile is a space that is one mile long and one mile wide. The map shows that the most densely populated areas are along coastlines. According to the U.

Donald A. By the year it is expected to have grown to between nine and ten billion people. During this time of dramatic population growth, the human impact on the planet has increased significantly, not only because of the huge increase in our numbers, but also because of the new technical power to dig deeper, cut faster, build larger, and traverse more quickly great distances in automobiles, trucks, and planes. As a result, serious new environmental problems have emerged on a global scale. These new threats raise critical new ethical questions for the human race. Yet even some of the most obvious ethical dimensions of emerging global environmental problems are only dimly seen by most; rarely are they part of the public debate. Now I think I understand better.

Ocean acidification is a direct consequence of increased human-induced carbon dioxide CO 2 concentrations in the atmosphere. Ocean acidification is happening in parallel with other climate-related stressors, including ocean warming and deoxygenation. Interaction between these stressors is often cumulative or even multiplicative, resulting in combined effects that are more severe than the sum of their individual impacts. Present ocean acidity change is unprecedented in magnitude, occurring at a rate approximately ten times faster than anything experienced during the last million years. This rapid timeline is jeopardising the ability of ocean systems to adapt to changes in CO 2 — a process that naturally occurs over millennia. Changes in ocean pH levels will persist as long as concentrations of atmospheric CO 2 continue to rise.

Global mean sea level has risen about 8—9 inches 21—24 centimeters since , with about a third of that coming in just the last two and a half decades. The rising water level is mostly due to a combination of meltwater from glaciers and ice sheets and thermal expansion of seawater as it warms. In , global mean sea level was 3. From to , global sea level rose 0. Explore this interactive graph: Click and drag either axis to display different parts of the graph. Saltwater Intrusion

As the global climate changes, rising sea levels, combined with high tides, storms and flooding, put coastal and island communities increasingly at risk. Protection can be achieved by building dikes or seawalls and by maintaining natural features like mangroves or coral reefs. Communities can also adjust by reclaiming land from the sea and adapting buildings to cope with floods. However, all measures have their limits, and once these are reached people may ultimately have to retreat. Choices made today influence how coastal ecosystems and communities can respond to sea level rise SLR in the future.

Climate Change: Global Sea Level
