Walking and Mapping: Artists as Cartographers.

The history of cartography traces the development of cartography , or mapmaking technology, in human history. Maps have been one of the most important human inventions for millennia, allowing humans to explain and navigate their way through the world. The earliest surviving maps include cave paintings and etchings on tusk and stone, followed by extensive maps produced by ancient Babylon , Greece and Rome , China , and India. In their most simple form maps are two dimensional constructs, however since the age of Classical Greece maps have also been projected onto a three-dimensional sphere known as a globe. The Mercator Projection , developed by Flemish geographer Gerardus Mercator , was widely used as the standard two-dimensional projection of the earth for world maps until the late 20th century, when more accurate projections were formulated.

An often provocative probing of the formal and political tensions involved in those conjunctures, this book contributes the important problematic of walking to the nascent scholarship at the interface between cartography and contemporary art. The structure of Walking and Mapping is quite experimental, with comparisons weaving back and forth across chapters. Its first third grounds contemporary walking practices in twentieth-century avant-garde attempts to overcome the division of art from lived practice predominantly those of psychogeography and post-war experimental performance , while the remainder turns more closely on the relationship between walking practices and various forms of mapping. The value and challenge of these fleeting practices are often bound up with their intransigence, and distance from textual or cartographic paraphrase. Many pieces, however, privilege graphic demands above the walk I am thinking of Heath Bunting and Kayle Brandon, who cut fences to avoid deviating from a circle drawn on a map of Bristol, pp. In others it is the map that concedes, either signalling its basic difference from the walk or reforming entirely so as to record experiential dimensions of walking.

From Guy Debord in the early s to Richard Long, Janet Cardiff, and Esther Polak more recently, contemporary artists have returned again and again to the walking motif. Today, the convergence of global networks, online databases, and new tools for mobile mapping coincides with a resurgence of interest in walking as an art form. She offers close readings of these projects—many of which she was able to experience firsthand—and situates them in relation to landmark works from the past half-century.

Indeed, we encounter artists testing and stretching the possibilities of documentation throughout the book.

Comprising a series of related but distinctive, lively, well worked and critically engaging chapters, the book will find readers across a range of disciplines and subjects. And it helps clear a path by which researchers in the humanities and social sciences alike might better understand and express that ''it is not so much what people do with maps as it is what maps do with people'' Wood, p. For this alone, the book is an important bridge between the relatively recent innovations of critical cartography, in particular, and a host of other fields just as recently innovated by the methods and metaphors of cartography in general.

Беккер понимал, что через несколько секунд его застрелят или собьют, и смотрел вперед, пытаясь найти какую-нибудь лазейку, но шоссе с обеих сторон обрамляли крутые, покрытые гравием склоны.
